“See that hilariously awkward photo above? Yeah, that’s a real candid moment between Selena Gomez and a fan, Fabio, caught by an eagle-eyed paparazzi in London on September 25. She was scheduled to perform live on Radio 1, one of the largest stations in the UK, and fans had been lining up to see her walk in and out of the building since the night before.

Fabio, a 21-year-old social media intern, was lucky enough to snag two moments with Selena — once on her way in and once on the way out. His selfies were totally adorable; you’d never realize there was an awkward moment at all, unless you’d seen it all over Twitter and Instagram. We couldn’t help but resurrect the hilarious moment on Instagram yesterday because who hasn’t felt that pain?

We talked to Fabio about the LOL-worthy photo, what Selena’s really like in person, and how ​you​ can get a guaranteed selfie with a pop star.

17: When did you meet Selena?

Fabio: I was London at Radio 1. They have this live lounge where different artists do their own songs and a surprise cover each day of September. There were a lot of fans there. I actually met a few people that had camped out overnight.

17: How long have you been a fan of hers?

Fabio:​ I’ve been a fan for a long time. I watched the Disney Channel all the time when I was younger, so I used to watch her show. I really liked her when she started to do her own music. I really enjoyed her first album, and ever since then, I’ve been hooked.

17: What was she like in person?

Fabio:​ Normally when people come out to radio stations, they don’t stop going in. They just stop going out. And with there being a lot of people, I thought she would just say, ‘Oh, I’ll stop on the way out.” But actually, she stopped for every person going in and out, and I was quite surprised by that. So I met her twice. I think everyone was pleased that she stopped twice and didn’t skip anyone. She actually cared that people turned up.

17: Who suggested the selfie?

Fabio:​ It was kind of both of us, really. She actually took the selfie, so I suppose she was up for it.

17: What was your reaction when you found out the paparazzi had snapped your photo?

Fabio:​ When I saw the picture, I laughed. It’s a funny picture! I did say to my friend, like, “I bet this picture is going to be everywhere.” And it ended up being everywhere. Then it went quiet, and then I saw your picture, and I was like, “Oh, Seventeen, you brought it back to life!”

​17: Do you have any tips for fans who want selfies with Selena?

​Fabio: If they follow her on social media, they can find out where she’ll be, because she tweets, “I’m going to do this at this radio station today.” If they arrive early enough, they’ll probably be able to get a photo.​”
