Selena appeared as a cover girl on March issue of People Espaniol, check out her exclusve interview below.
The singer with Mexican roots Selena Gómez releases her first album in Spanish and explains why she stopped pretending to have a perfect life and how this affected her: “It is impossible to maintain the appearance that everything is fine.”
If anyone has paid the price of fame dearly, that is Selena Gomez . “When I was younger I thought I had to be perfect and it is impossible to maintain the appearance that everything is fine. I got to the point where I did not feel authentic,” confesses the 28-year-old singer who decided to publicly share that she suffered from bipolarity and anxiety. “It was important to me to be honest with my fans as they have always been bravely open and honest with me. The connection I have with them is not lost on me.”
And today, after living a year of pandemic, Gómez also does not escape appreciating many things for which she had never been grateful. “I think we all have a new appreciation for many things that we previously took for granted. More than anything [I have appreciated] the importance of a genuine human connection,” he confesses. “I hope that when we get over this [from the pandemic], there will be fewer cell phones on dinner tables and we won’t take the experience of being together and living in the moment without the distractions of technology for granted.”
And with good music in Spanish in the background, much better. That is why the artist with Mexican roots took on the task of recording Revelación (Interscope Records), her first album in Spanish that includes songs like ” De una vez “, “Baila with me” and “Give it to me” along with singers like Raw. Alejandro and Myke Towers. “It is a beautiful language. I feel different when I sing in Spanish, it takes me to another world in my mind”, emphasizes Gómez, who carried out the entire creative process from a distance. “I really hated it at first and there were times when I just canceled a session because I didn’t want to try working through Zoom again,” he acknowledges. And she adds: “Despite the challenges, at the end of the day I feel very fortunate to have been able to continue doing what I love during the pandemic.”
Of all her projects in music, film and television, and what she learned in 2020, the singer opened her heart exclusively with People en Español.
How did it feel, from an interpretive point of view, to sing in Spanish?
I love to sing in Spanish. It is a beautiful language. I feel different when I sing in Spanish, it takes me to another world in my mind. There is something very attractive to me when I sing in Spanish. “De una vez” is such a beautiful song and I think it has a very powerful meaning behind it. Anyone who has had a broken heart can relate. We all have the pain and scars from various experiences we go through in life, but it’s really about how we heal ourselves. It’s not just about letting go of the past and forgiveness, but more importantly, it’s about strength, moving forward, and starting your next chapter. With “Dance with me” there is a sound and a tropical and sensual wave in the song. On a deeper level, there is a bit of sadness and nostalgia in the lyrics of the song, just like the thrill of making yourself beg but you know you have feelings for a person. I love how video conveys the sense of isolation right now that many of us are experiencing with the pandemic and how music can really connect people no matter where in the world they are.
What made you decide to sing in Spanish now? Was it something you’ve always had on your bucket list?
I’ve been talking about doing a project entirely in Spanish for about ten years and for one reason or another it didn’t happen. However, I am grateful that I waited because it would have been a completely different project 10 years ago. The last two years, naturally, led to the timing being right. Working on [the song] “Taki Taki” and then meeting Tainy when we worked together on “I Can’t Get Enough”, I was really inspired to finally do it. Tainy and I started exchanging ideas and it was from there [that this came about]. This absolutely is something on my wish list. I am very happy with the result and it will definitely not be the last.
Describe the songs, the lyrics, the rhythm. In what genre would you classify the songs? Are they based on your personal experience?
For me, with any of my songs, it always comes down to the lyrics. I want them to feel honest and I want people to connect with them. Working with Tiny on the EP I think you see his influence and what he brings, but at the same time the vibe the songs feel like they live in my world too. I don’t think music feels unexpected, it suits me organically.
Did you record it this year, in quarantine? How has it survived during this time?
We started recording the EP just before everything was closed due to covid-19. I had to adapt once we had to quarantine ourselves and I couldn’t get into the studio anymore. It was a difficult exercise for me to try to be creative with my collaborators when we couldn’t all be in the same room together. I really hated it at first and there were times when I just canceled a session because I didn’t want to try working through Zoom again. I do better in the creative process of being with others in the studio. Despite the challenges, at the end of the day I feel very fortunate that I was able to continue doing what I love during the pandemic.
We have also seen you in the kitchen, on Selena + Chef (HBO Max). How did you decide to do this? Have you always cooked?
In fact, I never thought I’d do a cooking show. The inspiration for the show really came when we were asked to stay home. I’ve always enjoyed cooking, but I never considered myself a good cook, I just enjoyed [it] when I did it. The best thing about doing the show has been the fact that we have raised over $ 360,000 for some amazing charities. I am very proud of that.
What has been the most important thing you have learned in recent months?
I’m no different from everyone else and I think we all have a new appreciation for many things that we previously took for granted. I think more than anything [I have valued] the importance of a genuine human connection. I know that is what I yearn for the most. I hope that when we get over this, there will be fewer cell phones on the dinner tables and we won’t take the experience of being together and living in the moment without the distractions of technology for granted.
What is your daily routine now? How much has changed since 2020?
Right now I’m working on a new TV series, so my routine is much more structured than it was last year. Generally, I have early calling times to be on set and she worked long hours. I love having this kind of structure in my life. I forgot how much I missed being on set. It feels amazing and I am also working with two comedy legends: Steve Martin and Martin Short.
You were one of the first young celebrities to speak openly about depression and mental health issues. Why did you decide to open up about it?
I have this platform [to be a public figure] and if I can make a difference I think it is my obligation. When I was younger I thought I had to be perfect and it is impossible to maintain the appearance that everything is fine. It got to the point where I didn’t feel authentic and it was important for me to be honest with my fans as they have always been bravely open and honest with me. They have told me very personal things that are happening in their lives. Sometimes they have even said that they have not told anyone else. The connection I have with them is not lost on me. It’s what motivates me to keep going.
What awaits you in the near future both professionally and personally that you can share?
I am looking forward to seeing some of the upcoming film and television projects that I am producing. I launched my Rare Beauty company in Mexico and North America last year and I am delighted with the response the products have had and our message of celebrating what makes you unique and being more compassionate towards ourselves. We will expand to other global territories this year. This is very exciting for me as I have spent the last three years dedicating myself to launching this company and I honestly couldn’t be happier.
