Selena’s interview for Hot 99.5

Selena’s interview on radio Hot 99.5 “Lyrics As Emojis With Selena Gomez”.

Selena Gomez just released her brand new single “Good For You” featuring A$AP Rocky, and we are already beyond obsessed! The song is the first single off of Selena’s new upcoming album, and the singer/actress recently stopped by iHeartRadio HQ where she not only talked to us about her new music, but she also showed us her new song lyrics in emoji.

Selena Gomez on her new song “Good For You”
“‘Good For You’ is actually one of the first songs that I recorded for the record and I think it just sets the tone perfect for the record just because it’s sexy, but not trying to hard. The track and everything kind of does it itself. It’s sensual, it reps women in a good way. I think it does something to a woman when they look good.”

Selena Gomez on her new album
“Good For You” has us extremely excited about Selena Gomez’s new album. And hopefully we won’t have to wait too much longer for it to be released, because Selena tells us that the record is almost done!

“I’m almost done. I’m basically done. I honestly really wanted to take my time with this. I went to Mexico. I’ve worked with the people I’ve always wanted to work with and I feel like I have a team around me that really supports my vision and that’s really important for me. I think that I am turning into a young woman, so this is the next phase in my life, and I think it is important for me to take control over it. [Fans] can expect a lot of insight on my perception of things. I think it shows a lot, not just about love. It’s more about my perception on retaliation or friendships or pain in different ways. Faith. Having a spiritual connection. It kind of covers all bases.”
Who else is excited?! Raise your hand! 🙋

Selena also talked to us about having A$AP Rocky on her new song, her love of hip hop, the “Good For You” music video, being the newest ambassador for Pantene, her own secrets to good hair (because let’s be honest — she has REALLY great hair), and what it was like being the villain in bestie Taylor Swift’s “Bad Blood” music video.

How is it having A$AP Rocky on your new song? Did you get to work with him or was it more of back and forth e-mail type collab?

“I didn’t. He actually just sent me the nicest message today. We’re hopefully going to get together soon. But I’ve always … I love hip hop. I love R&B. I love urban. I love music like that. So on my previous albums, I’ve attempted, and they’re like, ‘Aw, next album,’ or, ‘Aw, you’re too young.’ And it’s fine. Obviously, it is kind of scary coming into my territory with my fan base but for this record, I’ve really kind of taken everything into consideration. I am becoming an adult, which is important. So I recorded the song. I’m obsessed with A$AP’s new album. It’s so good, and he was the first person I thought of so I sent it to him and I was like, ‘Oh, I don’t know what he’s going to say.’ And he literally loved it and the next day, recorded his verse, and it was amazing.”

Do you have a favorite part of the “Good For You” music video?

“You know, Sophie Muller directed the video, which I think is awesome because I’m all about women, empowering other women. And it is such an important thing. So I mean, I love all of the video. It’s just very vulnerable and raw. I think I love my jeans and T-shirt just because it’s not the typical thing. I feel like people here, especially guys are like, ‘Ah, lingerie and sexy.’ I think being sexy as a young woman or girl, is not caring what other people think, wearing like casual things, feeling sexy.”
You just wrapped three films this year, which is so exciting, but it’s also a lot of work. How do you balance acting with music?
“I recorded some of the record and then I went and took some of the summer off to shoot some movies. And honestly, each profession is very important to me. I just have so many people tell me that I can’t do both and I’ve just wanted to prove people wrong. Because, like I see like Jamie Foxx. He [gets] an Oscar nomination and then a Grammy nomination. I’m like, ‘You’re going to tell me I can’t do it?’ I don’t think so. I’m going to be able to do both, and I know I can. So I just had such a passion and a drive for both. I think they’re extremely different and I love that.”

As the new ambassador for Pantene, what are your hair secrets?

“It’s funny. My hair stylist, as soon as I did it, they were like, ‘About time!’ Because everybody … I have thick hair. My parents have thick hair. I’ll put the extensions in or out or whatever but my hair is so thick and that partnership was such a blessing. I think for me, I’m always just trying new things with my hair. So it’s just about the fact that I have to understand how to like take care of it when I do because I’m doing curly and straight and teasing it and putting it in heat all the time. So deep conditioning, masks, sleep in them, all that stuff, all that jazz.”

What was it like filming the “Bad Blood” music video with Taylor Swift. Your character Arsyn was the villain.
“It was fun. Yeah, she called me up and I think I was the first person she asked to be in the video. She was just like, ‘I think it would be funny. Everybody knows that we’re friends. It would be cool if you were the villain.’ I was like, ‘I’m down.’ And we did some stunt training. I had no idea it was going to be like a legit thing, and we did some stunt training. It was just fun. It doesn’t count as work. We’re like hanging in between takes and like hanging out and talking. It’s fun.”
